Opening chat: Don’t underestimate a piece of paper, it may have “resurrected” seven or eight times

The vitality of modern paper is much stronger than you think. A used tissue or express packaging box may not be “on the job for the first time”. In the era of “carbon neutrality” and “green recycling”, the waste paper recycling and papermaking industry is moving from behind the scenes to the front stage, becoming a hot “dual-roof star” in the manufacturing and environmental protection industries.

When many customers find us, they will ask: “I want to build a waste paper recycling production line, where should I start? How much money do I have to invest? Can I make money back?” Today, we will use an article that is not so “industrial style” to explain this to you.

How big is the market prospect of waste paper papermaking?

According to data from the China Paper Association, by 2024, the total consumption of paper and cardboard in China will exceed 130 million tons, and more than 60% of the raw materials rely on waste paper recycling. Not to mention our domestic waste paper mills, even many companies in Southeast Asia are “sweeping paper around the world” and importing large quantities of waste paper raw materials from the United States, Japan, and Europe, which shows the confidence of this industry.

Why is waste paper so popular?

  • Low cost: at least 30%-50% cheaper than making paper with wood pulp;
  • Resource-friendly: Every ton of waste paper recycled is equivalent to saving 17 trees and 4,000 kWh of electricity;
  • Policy support: The policy orientation clearly encourages resource recycling. After the import of waste paper is restricted, it will further promote the development of the domestic recycling industry;
  • Market rigid demand: packaging paper, corrugated paper, household paper…Humans can never live without paper.

Therefore, building a waste paper recycling production line is not only a profitable business, but also stands at the forefront of global policies.

Common scales of production lines: from “small trial” to “high horsepower”

To build a waste paper recycling production line, you must first determine your production capacity positioning. In the industry, we usually divide the project scale by “daily output”.

Type Daily output Suitable for construction investment estimate

Line TypeDaily OutputSuitable ForEstimated Investment Cost
Small Scale30–100 tons/dayNew entrants, regional clientsRMB 5 million – 15 million
Medium Scale100–300 tons/dayEstablished paper companies expandingRMB 20 million – 50 million
Large Scale300–1000 tons/dayCorporate groups, export-oriented clientsRMB 80 million – 200 million

Tip: For projects with a daily output of 300 tons or more, it is recommended to reserve supporting space for self-built thermal power stations or boiler systems.

Equipment composition: What are the “big guys” in a complete waste paper recycling and papermaking line?

Don’t underestimate the waste paper recycling production line, because behind it is a strict “heavy equipment army”. We will disassemble it by section and show you step by step.

Raw material preparation system

  • Chain conveyor: responsible for packing waste paper into the equipment;
  • Paper shredder (crusher): cutting and tearing large pieces of waste paper;
  • Hydraulic pulper: stirring in water to break paper fibers into pulp;
  • Pulp pool & agitator: keep the pulp uniform and prevent precipitation.

Purpose: Turn “paper” into “pulp”, just like mixing flour into batter, ready for the next step of processing.

Cleaning and screening system

This is the key to waste paper recycling – “get out” all plastics, metal nails, and ink.

  • High-concentration cleaner/heavy impurity cleaner: remove sand, stones, and small metals;
  • Pressure screen/vibrating screen: filter pulp and remove unqualified particles;
  • Rinsing and screening equipment: improve pulp purity;
  • Inking removal system (deinking tower, flotation tank): used for deinking white paper when necessary, especially when producing cultural paper.

Pulp blending system

  • Concentration adjustment tank: control pulp concentration;
  • Additive system: add sizing agent, retention and filtration aid, dye, etc.;
  • Slurry homogenization tank: ensure stable quality.

Paper machine system (core link)

We have come to our old business – paper machine equipment, which determines the quality and efficiency of paper.

Select the paper machine type according to different paper types:

Paper typePaper machine recommended modelFeatures
Corrugated paper/boxboard2800mm~4200mm multi-cylinder wire paper machineSuitable for medium and low grammage, speed 600~800m/min
White board paperMulti-layer composite paper machine + surface deinking pulp systemWhite surface, good printing suitability
Household paperCrescent Former paper machineSpeed up to 1500m/min, soft product
Cultural paperFourdrinier long-wire paper machineHigh surface requirements, high deinking degree

Usually composed of:

  • Forming section (wire section): determines the thickness and uniformity of paper;
  • Pressing section: squeeze out water to improve the strength of paper sheets;
  • Drying section: dry with steam or electric heating;
  • Calendering section (optional): increase smoothness and brightness;
  • Reeler: roll into a large roll of finished paper.

The larger the paper machine model, the wider the wire width, and the higher the speed, the production capacity and investment cost will also soar.

Post-processing system (optional)

  • Rewinder: cuts the mother roll into small rolls;
  • Paper cutter: cuts into A4, A3 and other specifications as required;
  • Packer: packs and sto

Public auxiliary system

Don’t forget the “invisible investors”, these systems determine whether your factory can operate normally:

  • Boiler system (steam heating)
  • Water treatment system (circulating water + wastewater treatment)
  • Air compressor station (provides pneumatic power)
  • Electronic control system (PLC + DCS automation)
  • Factory building and foundation
  • Storage tank and pipeline network

Investment budget (taking a 200-ton per day corrugated paper line as an example)

Project name Budget amount(RMB 10,000)
Civil engineering (plant + foundation)800
Raw material handling system500
Slag removal and impurity removal equipment300
Pulp system200
Main paper machine system2200
Public works (boiler, water, electricity)600
Electrical automation300
Installation, commissioning and training200
Spare parts and reserve fund200
Totalabout RMB 53 million

Note: This is a mid-range configuration. If imported paper machines are used or the level of intelligence is improved, it can be increased to 70 million+.

Return on investment analysis: How long does it take to get back the investment? How to make money?

Income calculation:

Daily output of 200 tons × 90% paper output rate × 30 days × 200 yuan/ton gross profit = 1.08 million yuan/month profit

Cost factors:

  • Raw materials: waste paper (about 1,000 to 1,400 yuan/ton);
  • Staff: automated management within 30 people;
  • Energy consumption: electricity + steam + water, a total of about 150 to 200 yuan/ton;
  • Depreciation + maintenance: equivalent to 20 to 30 yuan per ton.

Roughly estimated, the investment recovery period is between 18 and 30 months, fluctuating according to the raw material market and paper prices.

Several common investment suggestions and “pitfalls” reminders

Suggestions:

  • Select a reasonable site, close to the waste paper recycling station/industrial park;
  • Select mature technology and equipment, and do not blindly pursue speed;
  • Do a good job in environmental protection approval, and treat sewage/waste gas up to standard;
  • Consider renting equipment for trial operation in the early stage of startup to reduce risks;
  • It is safer to have long-term paper sales channels or connect with end customers (such as packaging plants).

Pitfalls:

  • Eliminating equipment at a low price, which seems cheap but is actually a waste;
  • Ignoring the sewage treatment system, resulting in failure of environmental protection acceptance;
  • Ignoring the steam system design, low drying efficiency and high energy consumption;
  • No pulping and slag removal system is configured when the raw material quality fluctuates greatly.
